Danish architect Jørn Oberg Utzon (1918 - 2008) became famous in 1957 when he designed the Sydney Opera House. This monument, with its shell form that's so individual, has become the symbol of Australia all over the world. In 2003, Jørn Oberg received the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, the highest award in the field. In 2007, his life's work (the Sydney Opera House) joined the very exclusive club of UNESCO world heritage sites. Jørn Utzon's father built ships and yachts. His father's naval technical drawings sparked a lifelong fascination with ships. This interest is illustrated in the Utzon JU1 pendant, which he designed in the late 1940s. This pendant with its distinctive shape echoes the industrial silhouette of a ship. The simple, architectural forms are superimposed, creating wonderful shapes. First released in 1947, the Utzon pendant is now available in a special "Steel Blue" edition. This previously unreleased version commemorates the 50th anniversary of completion of the Sydney Opera House.
